Biography of Dean Elbe, BSc(Pharm), BCPP

I graduated from the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1992, making the Dean's list in my graduating year.

I worked with Overwaitea/Save-On-Foods Pharmacy in the British Columbia lower mainland and Kelowna, BC for a year before doing a residency in hospital pharmacy in 1993-94 at Vancouver General Hospital.  Upon finishing the residency program, I continued to work at VGH as a clinical pharmacist for approximately 3 years. My areas
of specialty at VGH were respiratory and gastrointestinal medicine.

I worked as a clinical pharmacist at the Richmond Hospital from October 1997 to July 2006, at Vancouver General Hospital My area of specialty was psychiatry. In October 2001, I completed the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties Board Certification in Psychiatric Pharmacy (BCPP), and was re-certified in 2008. I returned to VGH from July 2006-October 2007 as their information systems coordinator. In October 2007, I was lucky enough to obtain a position at BC Children's Hospital as a full-time clinical pharmacy specialist in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. I was named section editor of the Psychopharmacology Section of the Journal of the Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in September 2008.

I am a past-president of the Pharmacy Division of the UBC Alumni Association. Special interests in pharmacy practice include: psychiatry, drug information research, pharmacy services that take advantage of the internet and new media, and drug-nutrient interactions (especially grapefruit juice-drug interactions !)

My initial work on the drug-nutrient interaction project has served me well. I have been approached regularly to discuss this topic in various forums; an international health conference, television (CBC's 50/up), radio (The Doctor Is In with Dr. Don Nixdorf), in print (march 1998 issue of BC Pharmacy magazine), and now on the world wide web.  This site was featured on the Time.com website in June, 1998. It has now received over 230,000 hits in just over 7 years on the web. It was also featured on HealthScout and a CBS channel 2000 special report, The CBC Health Show,  the Ask Dr. Bob website, and RxList.com
