Biography of Dean Elbe, BSc(Pharm), BCPP

I graduated from the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1992, making the Dean's list in my graduating year.

I worked with Overwaitea/Save-On-Foods Pharmacy in the British Columbia lower mainland and Kelowna, BC for a year before doing a residency in hospital pharmacy in 1993-94 at Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre (VHHSC, also known as VGH).  Upon finishing the residency program, I continued to work at VHHSC as a clinical pharmacist for approximately 3 years.   My areas of specialty at VHHSC were respiratory and gastrointestinal medicine.

I am currently working as a clinical pharmacist at the Richmond Hospital.  I have been at Richmond Hospital since October, 1997. My area of specialty is psychiatry. In October 2001 I completed the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties Board Certification in Psychiatric Pharmacy (BCPP).

I am a past-president of the Pharmacy Division of the UBC Alumni Association

My special interests in pharmacy practice include: psychiatry, drug information research, pharmacy on the internet and drug-nutrient interactions (especially grapefruit juice-drug interactions !)

My initial work on this project has served me well.  I have been approached regularly to discuss this topic in various forums; an international health conference, television (CBC's 50/up), radio (The Doctor Is In with Dr. Don Nixdorf), in print (march 1998 issue of BC Pharmacy magazine), and now on the world wide web.  This site was featured on the Time.com website in June, 1998. It has now received over 230,000 hits in just over 7 years on the web. It was also featured on HealthScout and a CBS channel 2000 special report, The CBC Health Show,  the Ask Dr. Bob website, and RxList.com
